BoardroomMum Verdict

This book is a must-read for men and women keen to progress to board level. It not only gives the background of being a director, but gives real practical advice on how to get to the boardroom and importantly be successful in the boardroom. This book will help anyone understand what is going on in the boardroom.

Jo Haigh, the author of this book, has bought and sold over 300 companies in a corporate finance career of over 20 years. Having received numerous awards including the Non-Executive Director of the year award in 2013, Jo writes from a very honest, practical and experienced standpoint.

The book is divided into 7 chapters ranging from what directors are for, their legal responsibilities, getting a board position to dealing with boardroom politics and diversity. Clearly set out with various sub-headings going into more detail, sections are interspersed with examples of Jo’s ‘My Own Experience.’ These anecdotes give the points that the author is making a real context and colour.

There is a quiz at the end of the book, but really useful are the detailed and practical appendices (9 in total). These include details on how to put together the perfect board meeting agenda, and sample board papers.
